RxTEND™ Mobile Prescriptions
The future of prescriptions is hereRxTEND is the first fully operational digital prescription "ePrescribing" system accessible through both web and mobile device interfaces, designed and built to grow and scale as requirements and extensibility dictate, to securely deliver information from prescribers to pharmacists.
BackgroundThe estimated annual cost of drug-related morbidity and mortality is a staggering $177 billion in the United States. Errors related simply to poor handwriting cost thousands of lives per year. US figures put the number of related deaths at 7,000 and suggest 1.3 million injuries, while in Ontario the estimate is 400,000 preventable reactions to medication from which 4,000 die. People are dying, unnecessarily, from a problem that has a clear solution.
Solution The solution is to stop transcription errors and stop the issuance of incompatible drugs by providing instantaneous access to the information required to make informed decisions. How we get there is what RxTEND is all about.
While RxTEND is extensive, it is foremost a simple and straightforward tool to create prescriptions. By design, it is both easy to use and convenient. More importantly, RxTEND is vastly more precise and secure than traditional paper prescription pads. Unlike existing prescription pads that may be exposed to theft, fraud and abuse and have virtually no security measures, RxTEND is secure. It was designed to take every available measure against fraud and abuse, while simultaneously providing the highest level of access to required information.
RxTEND's digital prescription system is available for use by Doctors and Nurse Practitioners who have been authenticated and verified to issues prescriptions. While eliminating paper is an ultimate goal of ePrescribing, RxTEND retains the ability to print paper prescriptions and transmit scripts via a fully integrated electronic fax system as both an interim solution and an alternate delivery method for occasionally connected devices.
RxTEND was produced by physicians and faculty members of the University of Toronto for members of the healthcare industry.
FeaturesWith medication autocomplete we have preloaded over 3000 medications into the RxTEND database and are adding new ones all the time. Start typing a few letters and the user will have the option to have RxTEND complete the name by selecting the suggestion. If no match comes up, the user simply keeps typing. They may write whatever they wish. In future versions, RxTEND will verify dosing information and to verify its accuracy. With quick add menus users may select commonly used variables for Unit, Route, Frequency, and Refill number. These values will get added to the text box if selected. Of course, users may enter free text as well. In the Notes section, users may enter additional instructions here such as 'No Substitutions', limited use codes or instruction to stop certain medications while you are adding others.
Users have a variety of options for delivering the script to the pharmacist. Our software features the ability to print the script to a Bluetooth enabled printer using the standard Bluetooth technology used to connect headsets and handfree devices, which is available on nearly all current phones. Users may also Fax to a pharmacy by specifying the ten digit fax number or by looking up fax numbers of pharmacies in their patient’s area. Finally, an option to save and return to the script is also available. In the near future, these scripts will be made available to pharmacists in the RxTend network through an online portal, eliminating wasteful paper.
